History of the Leuser Ecosystem




Historical preservation of the Leuser Ecosystem started since 1920 . For indigenous peoples in Aceh , Gunung Leuser region itself is considered sacred areas or sacred .In August 1928 the Dutch Commission for the Protection of Nature submitted a proposal to the Dutch colonial government in Batavia to give protected status to a region extending from Singkil ( Hulu Sungai Simpang Kiri in the south ) , along the Bukit Barisan River valley toward Rawa Tripa and Beaches Meulaboh in the north , which is known today as the Leuser Ecosystem.

Furthermore, on February 6, 1934 , Indigenous leaders around the KEL and witnessed by the Dutch colonial government , signed a declaration of " Tread Master Declaration " in a custom event in Tread Mr. containing the commitment of Indigenous leaders to remain in the area of ​​the Leuser forest preserve . A few years later , precisely on February 28, 1998 issued Presidential Decree No. . 33 year 1998 about the Leuser Ecosystem Management , which is mentioned in the decree that the vast Leuser Ecosystem is 1.79 million hectares . This is a follow-up to the Presidential Decree of Minister of Forestry Decree No. RI . 227/Kpts-II/1995 .


After mapping the boundary in the Leuser Ecosystem , then in 2001 be stipulated comprehensive Leuser Ecosystem for Aceh Province through the Minister of Forestry Decree No. RI . 190/Kpts-II/2001 , covering an area of ​​2,255,577 hectares .


Along with the end of the armed conflict between the Free Aceh Movement ( GAM ) and the Government of Indonesia, which resulted in the MoU ( Memorandum of Understanding ) on August 15, 2005 , and was followed by the enactment of Law No. . 11 of 2006 on the Governing of Aceh , which also reaffirmed the importance of the LE as an area that needs to be protected and given KEL management entirely to the Government of Aceh as one of the rights of special autonomy for Aceh administration.
